Caranavi d. 3 december 2017 Peter Møllmann;
Today I went to the highlands near Caranavi. Arriving at the location we crossed a smal river and 20+ auroras flew up from their mudpudling.
I saw hundreds of auroras in a few hours. All very fresh, most common butterfly today, never saw so many. In the slo mo parts my sony xz premium smartphone take 960fps

Caranavi d. 6 december 2017; Peter Møllmann is calling from Caranavi and tells Gottfried Siebel and he is going to trip together, unfortunately it had rained all morning. I also spoke a little to Gottfried, I spoke English and he answered Spanish.
I hope they together will see some exciting butterflies out in the forest's deep gorges with small streams.

Long Proboscis Hawkmoth, Amphimoea walkeri (Boisduval, 1875). Caranavi, Yungas, Bolivia february 8, 2018. Photographer; Peter Møllmann

Long Proboscis Hawkmoth, Amphimoea walkeri (Boisduval, 1875). The wingspan is 147–164 mm. Adults are on wing year round. They have the longest insect proboscis in the world, and nectar from deep-throated flowers as Angel's Trumpet, Brugmansia arborea while hovering in the air.
Larvae feed on
Anaxagorea crassipetala, a lowland rain forest tree of Costa Rica and surrounding areas,
and probably other members of the
Annonaceae family.

Here another hawkmoth species with long proboscis from Madagascar
Dawins Hawkmoth, Xanthopan morganii praedicta (Rothschild & Jordan, 1903), named in honour of its predicted existence by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, exclusively pollinates the Madagascar Darwin's Orchid, Angraecum sesquipedale (Thouars, 1822). The proboscis of this hawk moth is long enough to reach the nectar receptacle of the orchid, which is between 20 and 35 cm (8 and 14 inches) in length.

Sematuirid Moths, Mania lunus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a moth of the family Sematuridae, found in forests of Central and South America, where it occurs from Mexico to Brazil.

The larvae of
Mania lunus were reared in Costa Rica in 2001 and are a bit similar to those of Coronidia, being well camouflaged but bearing small projections rather than long spines one the dorsal surface. Host plants recorded were Pracaxi fruit oil, Pentaclethra macroloba (Fabaceae) and Syzygium, Syzygium longifolium (Myrtaceae).

Italian Flag Metalmark, Ancyluris formosissima ssp. venerabilis (Stichel, 1916). Caranavi highlands, Yungas, Bolivia february 19, 2018. Photographer; Peter Møllmann

In South America, this butterfly is called a "living treasure" (the Latin name formosissima of this species, means “very beautiful”) and it is also called the Italian Flag Metalmark, Italian Flag Butterfly or Metallic Italian Flag Butterfly.

Ancyluris formosissima ssp: formosissima (Hewitson, 1870);
are present in tropical rainforests on eastside of Andean mountain, mainly in Sangay National Park in Ecuador.

Ancyluris formosissima ssp. venerabilis (Stichel, 1916);
can be found at an elevation from 1600- up to 3,000 metres above sea level in Manu Nationalpark, Peru to Caranavi highlands and Rio Zongo, Yungas, Bolivia.

Description: The upper sides of the forewings are dark brown with a blue-green band, while the base is white and brown. The hind wings are white, pink and brown, with a brilliant blue-green marginal band and a small red area. At the edge of the hind wings there is a short tail.

The wingspan: is about 38–45 mm.

Behaviors; The males, and less commonly the females, can be found imbibing moisture from bare soil or sandy riverbanks. They are nearly always encountered singly. Both sexes tend to avoid the heat of midday, preferring the cooler conditions of early morning or late afternoon. Even then they are more likely to be found in shady areas than in full sunshine.

It flies in August to September and February.

The larval food plants are maybe trees in the family Melastomataceae and Euphorbiaceae.
